South African Memoir Comes Full Circle
15/07/11 12:21 Filed in: Memoirs
What happened 39 years ago and 8,512 miles away came full circle yesterday, July 13, 2011. You see, I left Johannesburg, South Africa and found myself in Birmingham, Alabama—all those years and many, many miles away.
When the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute welcomed exchange students from South Africa to Birmingham, to my amazement, I found myself united with fellow alumni from Athlone Girls’ High School. Talking with these exuberant young people, it was gratifying to learn how things have changed for the better since the fall of apartheid. It was heartwarming to meet these young South Africans who did not grow up under apartheid and to see the pride and hope shining in their eyes. May they all carry home precious memories of their visit to Birmingham.
