How Teachers Can Use Enhanced eBooks

Teaching with Enhanced eBooks

In the previous blog, I provided an overview of the advantages of using Enhanced eBooks for the general readers
Advantages of Enhanced eBooks. In this blog, I’ll focus on the benefits of Enhanced books for teachers with examples that you can download and use in your classrooms. While thoughtfully Enhanced eBooks can indeed enhance your students learning and appreciation, finding examples I considered worthwhile was not as easy as I anticipated. Read More...

Conservationists Saving Nature

Salute to Alabama’s Nature Conservationists

We are bombarded daily by dire news of global warming, the extinction of species, the destruction of the natural environment, and the urgent need for alternative energies. Too often this leaves us feeling discouraged and powerless. Rather than pay lip service to these problems, I feel the need to do something that will make a difference—even in a small way. The Heartbeat of Mother Earth

Tenth Annual Science and History Day at Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park

Perched on a high and windy overlook, we listen to the steady, hypnotic beat of tribal drums, which the First Nation of Canada call the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Far below, a vast prairie stretches away to the horizon. We are a long, long way from home, in Alberta, Canada, at the world’s oldest, largest, and best preserved buffalo jump, where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains. This place, the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site, was used by aboriginal peoples for nearly 6,000 years.  Read More...

Audubon Christmas Bird Count
On a frosty Saturday morning, we woke to the first rays of the sun nibbling at the dark horizon, turning the sky from grey to silver.  While we slurp down mugs of coffee inside our cosy house, the more hardy bird watchers had already begun the Birmingham Audubon Chris

On The Trail of Red-cockaded Woodpecker

We bump through the tall grass and brush to the nesting site of a male. As the sun drifts lower, we hear the raspy chirp, chirp of the woodpecker. Eric and Mark train powerful binoculars on the nests, easily detected by streaks of sap running down the bark. With net at the ready, Eric waits patiently, ready to spring into action.

Aug. 11, 2012: Ebenezer Tupelo Swamp Ecological Preserve.
Our journey continues here as we step off into the unknown of a writing project and see it through to its destination . . .

Ghosts may be haunting the story I’m stitching together for Return of The Red-cockaded Clan. This eerie thought pops into my head as soon as I hear that we are headed for Ebenezer Tupelo Swamp. You see I cannot help associating Ebenezer with Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas. And in our previous adventures (see Blog 2), we stumbled upon a ghost town, which led to a story about bridge with a haunted history on the road to Sweetwater Mansion.

July 22: A trip to the Talladega National Forest

To write Return of  Red-Cockaded Clan, I need to get the feel of the woodpecker’s natural habitat. With this in mind, I set off on a trip to their nesting site in the Talladega National Forest, accompanied by my husband Boris and Greg Harber from the Birmingham Audubon Society. We arrive there late in the afternoon, after a rain shower. The beauty of the place struck me immediately, and I know that I will write about it in my story . . .

I Love Real Books ebooks

Enhanced eBooks the Insanely Great Innovation
When I hear friends comment, “I love the feel of a real book in my hand, I just don’t enjoy reading from a digital device,” I reply, “I love real books and ebooks, too.” Please don't misunderstand me, I revel in the feel of traditional printed books as much as you do. Don't you agree, however, that now it's great to have the choice between physical printed books and ebooks, depending on your needs.

Rare Species Saved from Extinction

Saving One of the Rarest species in the United States
Boris and I are absolutely thrilled about an upcoming trip to shoot video footage of biologists reintroducing the endangered Lampmussel (Lampsilis virescens) into Bear Creek, a tributary of the Tennessee River, to save the species from extinction. We plan to use these videos in our Enhanced Print Book, The Adventures of The Sizzling Six: The Living Treasure, young adult eco mystery series. Over 1,000 cultured mussels, raised at the Alabama Aquatic Biodiversity Center, will be released on October 6, 2011 and we will be there to record it. “We’re excited to be part of saving what is truly one of the rarest species in the United States,” said Dr. Paul Johnson, Program Supervisor.  Stay posted for more about our adventure and a sneak preview of the  actual videos in about ten days!

Enviornmental Fiction Encourage Teens To Read More

QR CODE ENHANCED BOOKS/QR RAVE BOOKS (QR Reading And Video Enterainment-trademark pending)
If statistics are to be believed, Mobile phones are becoming so ubiquitous that only 9% of American teens would be willing to go without their cell phones for 24 hours and the average child spends an hour and a half texting each day. So can we boost teen reading with mobile devices? We certainly think they can!
We’ve harnessed the power of mobile devices to integrate our printed books with video clips to “magically” transport the readers from the words on the printed page to let readers see and hear what the characters in the story are seeing and hearing. HOW?? Just watch the two-minute video on HOME page.
And please help to distribute these books FREE to schools, libraries and organizations of your choice. In addition you will receive great rewards. HOW?
