Tenth in a series of environmental eco mysteries
When one of the worst oil spills in history threatens the critically endangered diamondback terrapins, the Sizzling Six rush into action to help protect them. But as the oil continues to spread throughout the Gulf of Mexico, time is running out for the terrapins and other marine life. The Sizzling Six quickly learn that cleaning up after the spill is not as easy as they first thought. Will they be able to help save the terrapins before it’s too late? In the newest eco adventure featuring the Sizzling Six, Operation Terrapin Rescue encourages readers to protect the animals and environment around them. As the Sizzling Six learn, helping the local environment is incredibly rewarding—even small actions have lasting and significant impacts.
Reviews
I came across Operation Terrapin Rescue and was immediately touched by its heart and purpose. The idea of young characters stepping up to face one of the worst oil spills in history, all while trying to save endangered terrapins, feels both urgent and inspiring. It shows that even in the face of overwhelming challenges, courage and teamwork can make a real difference.
What I love most is how your story doesn’t just entertain, it educates and empowers. For young readers especially, seeing the Sizzling Six throw themselves into action reminds them that they too can protect the fragile beauty of our planet. That blend of adventure, responsibility, and hope makes this book so special.
I truly hope more children, parents, and educators discover this story, because it feels like the kind that leaves a lasting mark not only on the imagination but also on the heart.
I am curious. When you began writing this adventure, what inspired you to center it on the terrapins in particular?

“Operation Terrapin Rescue” is another tantalizing adventure of a group of young people, the Sizzling Six, who respond to the effects of an environmental disaster. Claire Datnow weaves the story around the actual events and the following conservation efforts to save a species of turtle that took place in the Gulf of Mexico following the Exon oil spill more than a decade ago. The book is a fascinating and easy read and embellishes the conservation ethic of many youngsters of this generation—Dr. Ken Marion Professor Emeritus of Environmental Biology and Chair of the Department of Biology from 2000-2008, has served on state environmental organizations, and as President of the Alabama Fisheries Association, the Alabama Academy of Science, and the Association of Southeastern Biologists.
